Overview
What is a Hernia?
A hernia develops when an internal organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak area in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. It commonly appears as a visible or noticeable bulge in the abdomen or groin.
The swelling may become more prominent while standing, coughing, lifting heavy objects or straining. Some hernias cause mild discomfort, while others can gradually increase in size and lead to pain or complications.
Hernias generally do not heal on their own. Whether surgery is required depends on the type of hernia, symptoms, size, progression and overall health of the patient.
Important: Sudden severe pain, vomiting, abdominal swelling, or a hernia bulge that becomes hard, tender or cannot be pushed back may require urgent medical evaluation.
Causes
What Causes a Hernia?
Muscle Weakness
Weakness in the abdominal wall may be present from birth or develop gradually with age.
Heavy Lifting
Repeated heavy lifting or excessive physical strain can increase pressure inside the abdomen.
Chronic Cough
Persistent coughing can repeatedly put pressure on weakened abdominal muscles.
Obesity
Excess body weight can increase pressure on the abdominal wall and contribute to hernia formation.
Constipation & Straining
Frequent straining during bowel movements may increase intra-abdominal pressure.
Abdominal Surgery
A hernia can sometimes develop through a weakened area around a previous surgical incision.
Symptoms
Signs & Symptoms to Watch For
- Visible lump or bulge in the groin or abdomen
- Burning or aching sensation near the hernia
- Pain or discomfort around the swelling
- Bulge becoming larger while standing or straining
- Pain while coughing, bending or lifting
- Discomfort during physical activity
- Heaviness or pressure in the groin
- Swelling around a previous surgical scar
Diagnosis
How We Diagnose a Hernia
Diagnosis usually begins with a detailed clinical examination to determine the location, size and type of hernia.
- Physical Examination – The surgeon checks for swelling or a bulge while standing, coughing or straining.
- Medical History – Symptoms, previous surgeries, lifestyle and medical conditions are evaluated.
- Ultrasound – May be recommended when the diagnosis is unclear or deeper structures need assessment.
- CT Scan / Imaging – May be advised for complex, recurrent or difficult-to-diagnose abdominal wall hernias.
The exact diagnostic approach depends on each patient’s condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not every hernia requires immediate surgery. Small or minimally symptomatic hernias may sometimes be monitored. However, painful, enlarging or complicated hernias may require surgical repair. A surgeon should evaluate the condition before deciding.
A hernia usually does not close permanently on its own because the weakness or defect in the abdominal wall remains present.
There is no single technique that is best for every patient. The appropriate method depends on the type, size and location of the hernia, previous surgeries and the patient's health.
Some discomfort after surgery is expected. Minimally invasive procedures use smaller incisions and may reduce postoperative discomfort for appropriately selected patients.
The duration varies depending on the type and complexity of the hernia. Simple repairs may take less time, while recurrent or complex repairs can require longer procedures.
It depends on the surgery performed and the physical demands of your job. Desk-based work may be resumed sooner than physically demanding work. Follow the surgeon's specific instructions.
Recurrence is possible after any hernia repair. Factors such as tissue quality, obesity, smoking, chronic coughing, surgical technique and postoperative strain may influence recurrence risk.
Mesh is commonly used in many adult hernia repairs to reinforce weakened tissue, but it is not required in every case. The decision depends on the type of hernia and individual clinical situation.
Some hernias remain stable, while others progressively enlarge or become painful. Rarely, bowel or tissue can become trapped or lose its blood supply, which may require emergency surgery.
